So… I’m sharing my trade secrets with you — here is how I declutter — whether I’m working in my own home or with clients at their home or in their business.
Boil the process of organization down to three steps:
Step 1
Use the SORT method.
S = Save (what you keep)
O = Offload (what you donate or give away)
R = Relocate (move items to a different room)
T = Trash (throw away)
Step 2
Start in non-emotional spaces.
- It’s best to start easy and work up to spaces that carry emotions/sentiments.
- Easy items to declutter: Toiletries, makeup, newspapers, magazines, expired food, medications, cleaning supplies, water bottles, mugs, glasses
Step 3
Categorize your belongings.
- Pick 1 space at a time (for example, closet, drawers, bedroom)
- Pull everything out
- Sort like items together
- Discard duplicates
